PREPARING TO LEAD A LIFE BIBLE STUDY-
Part 1

We know that leadership is intentional influence. The most powerful influencer is God and His word. Thus, we are told to take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (Eph.6:17). It is sharper than any two-edged sword, judging even the thoughts and attitudes of the heart (Heb.4:12). But if we are going to share this most influential book,we need to study it and correctly handle it (2 Tim.2:15). Those that don't can end up twisting Scripture to their own ruin (2 Pet.3:16). So let's learn to properly dig out the gold out of God's word so we can  enrich many. When we begin studying the Bible, we want to come wanting to hear and do what God has to say to us through His word. That's why I want to encourage you to have a pen and your wealth catcher with you as you  read. It's your statement of faith that you're eager to catch the wealth that God want to share with you in His word. So let's get started by taking Romans 3:21-31 as a passage to study through. The three parts of discovery Bible study are Observation (What does it say?), Interpretation (What does it mean?) and Application (What does it mean to me?). This week, we will just focus on Observation. To do this, let's begin by reading the passage carefully, like Sherlock  Holmes, to discover all that we can from it. First, prayerfully read Romans 3:21-31 through a couple times- the first time to get the big picture then the second time to focus on the details.

1. Now you're ready to LOOK and LIST the F.A.C.T.S of what you see in Rom.3:21-31. (This is Observation- observation is all about getting the FACTS). Post your response to the following-

Fast Facts- List at least 3 short, striking truths you see. These clear facts are often skipped over by people trying to find some deep, secret truth. But God is not trying to hide His truths from us. (For example, there are several striking truths in John 3:16- There is a God; He is loving; He loves the entire world; He loves us so much that He gave us His only Son, etc. Such points are how pastors can then preach an entire sermon or series on one verse.)

Ask Questions. Imagine that you were there and ask questions that come to mind. How would you feel hearing this portion of Romans being read- is this passage good news or bad? Ask the good detective questions- Who, What, Where, When. Who is writing this to whom? What is this about? Where was the author or where were the people? When was this taking place? What would you like more insight on? List at least 3 questions you come up with. No answers needed at this point.

Check for key words- List at least 3 key words. These are words that strike you as important Bible words (gospel, grace, wrath of God, hell, etc) or because they are repeated or because you're not sure what they mean. In my Bible I like to circle key words and underline key phrases. I'll also draw lines to connecting or contrasting thoughts. I use a 4 color pen- Red for dangerous things like temptation, sin, hell and the devil; Green for God and God's promises.  The Black and Blue I'll use for writing notes in the margins of my study Bible. (Beware of using a felt tipped pen. It will bleed through to the other side.) I even use correction fluid when I make a mistake. Once I got teased as someone watched me do this- "Oh, so you just white out the parts in the Bible that are too convicting for you, eh Dave?!" Ugh! :)

TITLE this passage. What's your title for Rom.3:21-31?

Summarize the passage. This is optional. If it's hard to reduce the passage to one title, then go ahead and write a short summary of the story or passage. Remember, writing clarifies your thinking. What's the main thing and the plain thing?

Here's some added words on words to also be on the look out for-
Contrasts- words such as "but" or "however"  (This is huge in our passage.)
Comparisons- "like" "as"
Conjunctions- "and" (But only if this strikes you as important.)
Correlatives- "either, or; both, and"
Conclusions- "therefore, for, because, so then, for this reason"
Chronology- "first, second, next, hour, day, year, present, past, now, then, before, beforehand,
Consequences- "If, then, since
Confirmations- "Amen, surely, yes indeed
Commands or Questions
Constant or repeated usage- What important words are repeated?
Cultural expressions- "Greet one another with a holy kiss."
Christian terminology- words that may need some clarifying- propitiation, lamb of God, justification
Category of literature- Is this prose (regular writing), poetry, proverbs, prophecy, parables? OT or NT?
Quotations (Ya, I know- but it almost sounds like it should have started with the letter C. :)

Now that you're done, you should have at least 3 Fast Facts listed, 3 questions you listed, 3 key words listed and a title or short summary of the passage listed. Think how much better you now know this passage and can speak with more knowledge and influence regarding it.  And we haven't even gotten to Interpretation and Application yet. (We'll cover those in the next two blogs.)

Please enjoy and pass on this good mini-movie to the people you think would benefit from it. Keep sowing good seed. This includes loaning out Lifelines and sharing your testimony. (Did you notice how Pastor Mike did this in his great gospel message Sunday?) The more you sow, the more you can expect to harvest.

Announcements / Reminders

I am right proud of each and every one of you who have continued on with this NGL ministry. The bar has been set high and you have been rising to this leadership level. Well done! You'll be crossing the finish line in less than two months. Keep up the good work!

Please review and be ready to quote Ephesians 2:1-10 at our next NGL leadership meeting, Sunday, July 13th. I want us to be able to quote this all together on stage at the end of August, if time permits.

Hope you're continuing to catch wealth with your wealth catcher.
Here's a couple great quotes for it from some fairly smart men-

"Thoughts disentangle themselves passing over the lips or through the pencil tips." Dawson Trotman- founder of the Navigators

"Write down the thought of the moment. Those that come unsought for are commonly the most valuable." Sir Francis Bacon

  1. Fast Facts - 1) All people have sinned and have fallen short of the standard of living that
God has set for us. 2) The fulfillment of demands to be in a relationship with God has been made known to us from God. 3) The demands have been stated through the Law of Moses and from prophetic words given to us by God through Prophets.

Ask Questions - What is propitiation mean? This sounds more like a something an attorney would write. Why is there such a importance stressed on the law and how we receive justice?
What is the purpose of the law?

Check for Key Words - Here are the words that I noticed and the number of times I they were repeated in the text (NIV version) . Righteousness (2) , law (6), faith (7), justice or form of the word (7).

Title - My NIV says "Righteousness Through Faith." I would like to title it, "God's Declaration of Righteousness."

Summary - The law is used to show the righteousness of God, but it is not the way to receive the righteousness of God. There is no distinction when it comes to those who can receive punishment for their sin, or those who can be saved. However, the key is not found in us securing our own righteousness by keeping the law, but God giving His own righteousness to those who believe in His Son. God couldn't forgive sinners without the appropriate consequences for breaking the law. Jesus was the sacrifice for us. The Son of God took the wrath and punishment that we deserved, for us, so that we can have a relationship with God. Therefore, Jesus is the object of our faith. We have faith in a person, not a thing. For it is what He did for us on the Cross, not by anything we do trying to work by the law.

  2. 1. fast facts- We have all sinned. There is only one God. Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice of God for us.

Questions- How would this be said in todays world? How did people react to this back then? Who actually read this?

key words- Faith, Law and Sacrifice

summary- The only law there is, is the law of faith in God. It was only by his grace and sacrifice of his son that we can be saved. Everybody has sinned there for no one is good enough. That is why we must have faith in what God has done for us.

  3. 1. Fast Facts:
God is Righteous and He revealed and reveals it to those He chooses…
Everyone is a sinner in life
Due to that one can only be justified by grace alone through faith in Jesus Christ

    2. Questions:
    Propitiation? What does this mean?
How did the Lord’s propitiation show the Lord’s righteousness?
Divine forbearance (knowledge he passed over former sins? - what does he mean?)

    3. Key words of course are:
Righteousness, law, faith, just/justice. In addition, I would add some words that give deeper meanings thanks to your help. These words being “But” now the righteousness, (v.21), “because” in his divine (v. 25b), “so that” he might (v.26b)...

    3.
    Summary:
Everyone is a sinner and Jesus Christ’s gracious life is the only way to get saved and into heaven. The Law shows us that faith in the Lord helps individuals get saved and not by works, so individuals do not boast.

  4. Hope everyone had a great 4th of July! Sorry this post is late—my family and I went to Michigan for a few days and just got back. This blog post by Dave is a great example of how to dig into the Bible and allow it to get into your mind and not just ‘go in one ear and out the other’. It really helps to ask and answer questions. So here are the first things that stand out to me:
    Fast Facts:
Verse 21 says that the Law and the Prophets testify to the righteousness of God. Although there are differences between the Old and New Testaments (or as I heard someone put it, Part 1 and Part 2 of the Bible) the message is ultimately the same. The believers in the OT didn’t know the name of Jesus but they could become right with God the same way through repentance and faith.
Verses 22 & 23 say that both Jews & Gentiles have sinned. Jewish people generally had a lot of spiritual blessings that the Gentiles did not have but that did not make them any less sinful.
Verse 25 says that God demonstrated His righteousness through the shedding of Jesus’ blood. The wicked actions of people wound up showing how God is right.
    Questions:
    Who received this letter?
    What was their spiritual background?
Why does Paul refer to Jews and Gentiles so much in Romans?
    Key Words:
    Righteousness; Faith; Law
    Title:
    Righteousness Revealed

  5. Fast Facts: 1) All have sinned and have fallen short of the glory of God. 2) God is the God of both the Gentiles and the Jews. 3) People can be freely justified through faith in Jesus.

Questions: 1) Does observing the law have any place in the life of Gentile believers? 2) Where did Paul write this letter? 3) To whom was this letter written?

    Keywords: 1) Righteousness. 2) Faith. 3) Law.

Title: Righteousness from God. Righteousness Through Faith (NIV title).

Summary: Because all sin and fall short of God's glory, God justifies believers, both Gentiles and Jews, through faith in Christ Jesus.

    ReplyDelete
  6. 3 Facts:
    1. Righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe (v.22)
    2. God left sin before Christ go unpunished
    3. A person is justified by faith

    Questions:
Why did God leave sin before Christ go unpunished?
What difference is there between Jew and Gentile if any?
Why did God choose that present time to reveal his righteousness?

    3 Key words:
    Righteousness
    Atonement
    Nullify

Title: Righteousness only given through faith in Christ

    Summary:
Apart from the Law Righteousness of God has been made known through Christ death on the Cross in which all sin was atoned for, Jew or Gentile alike. All have fallen short of the glory of God and all will be justified through faith in Christ Jesus alone.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Three Facts:

    1. The righteousness of God is not given by the Law.
    2. God is the one who justifies us, through faith in Christ’s sacrifice.
    3. God justifies both Jew and Gentile through that same faith, not by the Law.

    Three Questions:

    1. What Law is being spoken of here?
    2. To whom was this Law given?
    3. How is this Law “Upheld”, in a faith justifying setting?

    Three Key Words:

    1. Justify
    2. Faith
    3. Righteousness

    Summary of Romans 3:21-31:

    Title: “Justification by Faith”

The Jewish Law was not given to be a means for justification of oneself and obtaining righteousness, but instead given as a means to point both Jew and Gentile to their need for a Savior. Faith in Jesus Christ’s sacrifice alone sets us upon Righteousness.

  8. 1.) Fact 1: "This righteous is given through faith in Jesus Christ'
Fact 2: "For all have sinned fall short of the glory of God"
Fact 3: "Since there is only one God.." THERE IS ONLY ONE GOD.
Does having faith require there to be law?
What audience is this being spoken to?
Is righteousness ONLY given through faith?

    Key words: Law, Righteousness, Justify

    Title: Righteousness in Faith
Righteousness is given through faith. No one will be given justice if their justice only relied on who followed the laws.We have righteousness and faith because of God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement.

  9. This passage brings some hard, real news and ends with equally real, good news.
    Fast Facts:
    1) First of all there is a just God who must remain just.
    2) There was a law placed by God for men to follow and by following the law they were granted righteousness.
    3) Now faith in Jesus fulfills the law because God justly poured out wrath on His son for everyone who had disobeyed the law and because God is not limited to a people group this grace which came from his justice is free to all people.
    Questions:
    1) Is Paul talking about more than one law? There is one law mentioned at the beginning of Romans 3:21 “apart from law…” and another one which seems to be made distinct with the word “the” and a capitalized first letter “the Law”. However, when “the law” is used again it is with a lower case letter. I this a typo or are there more than one law being discussed here?
    2) Is this passage focusing on the importance of justice in passing to righteousness?
    3) Or is this passage about universal forgiveness for those who put their faith in the blood of Jesus Christ?

Keywords: Righteousness, law, justice, faith, grace
Title: At this point I would title this passage Justification, Righteousness and Universal Grace.

I am so sorry for the late post!
